Last Funeral Rites

A few weeks, or even a year, after the funeral there will be “the last funeral rites.” This is a ceremony in which the responsibilities of the deceased person are passed on to another family member. If it was a mother who died, the responsibility for her children might be passed on to her sister. If she had made a will, she would have named the person to take over her responsibilities, but in the absence of a will the elders of the clan decide. The custom predates Christianity in Uganda and stems from the traditional religion, but has to a large extent been absorbed into the various prevailing religions, so that there is often singing of hymns, prayers, and little to do with any Kiganda ritual. Today, in a more materialistic society, who is named as the heir or successor is also important since there may be financial implications.

Funeral rites usually involve staying the night at the ancestral home. Many of these ceremonies take place in the village and the local people build temporary tent-like shelters of banana leaves. Since this provides an opportunity for men and women to get together in intimate circumstances, many children have been begotten at these funeral rites gatherings—completing the cycle of life.
